EDITORS COMMENTS
This hand-coloured lantern slide depicts a breathtaking view of the Mer de Glace glacier in the late 1890s. Located on the northern slopes of Mont Blanc in the French Alps, the Mer de Glace, or "Sea of Ice," is one of the most famous glaciers in Europe. In this image, the snow-covered glacier stretches out before us, its icy blue crevasses and serene, still surface reflecting the clear, blue sky above. The mountaineer in the foreground adds a sense of scale and adventure to the scene. Dressed in his winter gear, he stands at the edge of the glacier, gazing out at the vast expanse before him. The image captures the sense of wonder and exploration that drew intrepid travellers to the Alps during the late 19th century. The Mer de Glace was a popular destination for tourists and mountaineers alike during this period. The first tourist train to the glacier was opened in 1880, and the area became a hub of alpine activity. This lantern slide would have been used to showcase the beauty and allure of the Alps to audiences back home, inspiring a sense of adventure and wanderlust. This image is part of the Boswell collection, Box 196, Slide number 9, and dates from the late 1890s. It offers a unique glimpse into the past, transporting us back to a time when the Alps were a symbol of adventure and discovery.
