EDITORS COMMENTS
This stunning handcolored copperplate stipple engraving is an exquisite example of naturalistic ornithological illustration from the 19th century. The print, taken from Frederic Cuvier's "Dictionnaire de Sciences Naturelles: Ornithologie," was produced in Paris between 1816 and 1830. The illustration was created by the skilled hand of Jean Gabriel Pretre, who was a painter of natural history at Empress Josephine's zoo and later became an artist at the Museum of Natural History. The image features three distinct bird species: the Roseate Spoonbill (Platalea ajaja), the Yellow-billed Stork (Mycteria ibis), and the Western Capercaillie (Tetrao urogallus). The Roseate Spoonbill, with its distinctive pink feathers and unique spoon-shaped bill, is a resident of the Americas. The Yellow-billed Stork, also known as the Jabiru, is a large wading bird found in Africa, Asia, and South America. The Western Capercaillie is a large, gamebird native to Europe. The intricate details of each bird's plumage, beak, and other features are rendered with remarkable accuracy and artistry. The use of handcoloring adds depth and vibrancy to the image, bringing the birds to life on the page. The engraving was executed by Guyard, under the direction of Pierre Jean-Francois Turpin, and published by F.G. Levrault. This beautiful work of art is a testament to the naturalistic illustration techniques of the time and the dedication of its creators to documenting the natural world.
