EDITORS COMMENTS
On the occasion of the most eagerly anticipated honeymoon in royal history, this page from the ILN Royal Wedding Number commemorates the marriage of Princess Margaret, the younger sister of Queen Elizabeth II, to photographer Anthony Armstrong-Jones on May 6, 1960. The newlyweds were set to embark on a romantic journey aboard the royal yacht Britannia, which is depicted here sailing down the River Thames in London. The sight of the elegant vessel, with its snow-white sails billowing in the wind, drew large crowds to the banks of the Thames as it prepared to set sail for the Caribbean. The Earl and Countess of Snowdon, as the couple were known after their marriage, were the first royal couple to honeymoon abroad, breaking with tradition and opting for a private and secluded getaway. The Britannia, under the command of Lord Charteris, the Queen's equerry, was the perfect choice for their journey, offering them the privacy and luxury they desired. The image of the royal yacht sailing down the Thames was captured on film by the best photographers of the day, including the newlywed's own husband, Anthony Armstrong-Jones, who would go on to become the first official royal photographer. This iconic photograph, along with others in this commemorative page from the ILN Royal Wedding Number, offers a unique glimpse into the history of this landmark moment in royal history.
