EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph captures the moment of two Russian men, dressed in heavy coats and hats, as they travel through the snowy streets of Manchuria, now a part of China, in a rickshaw. Manchuria, located in the northeastern part of China, was under Russian control from 1896 to 1924, during which time it was known as the Russian Far East. The men's destination is unknown, but their journey through the winter landscape adds to the intrigue of this image. The rickshaw, a common mode of transportation in East Asia during the late 19th and early 20th centuries, is pulled by a Chinese rickshaw puller, who is not visible in the photograph. The Russian men appear to be deep in conversation, their faces illuminated by the warm glow of a lantern hanging from the rickshaw. The backdrop of the photograph is the frozen Da River, which winds its way through the city of Harbin, now a major cultural center in China's Heilongjiang Province. Harbin, which was also under Russian control during this period, was known for its vibrant Russian community and European-style architecture. The photograph offers a glimpse into the rich history of Manchuria and the cultural exchange that took place between China and Russia during this time. The image is a testament to the interconnectedness of the world and the diverse experiences that shaped the lives of people in different parts of the globe.
