EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative photograph captures the ominous and otherworldly landscape of Mount Erebus on Ross Island in the Antarctic, during Sir Robert Falcon Scott's ill-fated polar expedition to the South Pole between 1910 and 1912. Mount Erebus, an active volcano, is depicted here with its slopes shrouded in smoke and cloud. The image was captured by Lieutenant Thomas Gran, a member of the Norwegian Antarctic Expedition under Roald Amundsen, who had earlier reached the South Pole on December 14, 1911, beating Scott's team to the historic achievement. Gran took this photograph in 1913, during a visit to Ross Island, when he was caught in a steam cloud on the summit of Mount Erebus. The volcanic activity and harsh Antarctic conditions are vividly conveyed in the image, with the cloud cover obscuring much of the mountain's peak and the surrounding landscape. The steam clouds rising from the volcano add an element of danger and mystery to the already challenging polar environment. The Scott Expedition, which aimed to reach the South Pole and return, tragically ended in failure when Scott, his companion Lawrence Oates, and Edgar Evans perished on their return journey in March 1912. This photograph serves as a poignant reminder of the extreme conditions and risks faced by the polar explorers of the early 20th century, and the enduring allure of the Antarctic continent.
