EDITORS COMMENTS
of William MacGillivray's "Watercolour Drawings of British Animals," created between 1831 and 1841, features an intriguing assemblage of three distinct chondrichthyan species: the Greater Spotted Dogfish (Scyliorhinus stellaris), the Spiny Dogfish (Squalus acanthias), and the Bull Huss or Nursehound (Scyliorhinus borealis). These elasmobranchii, belonging to the order Carcharhiniformes, are depicted with remarkable detail and accuracy, showcasing their unique features and subtle coloration. The Greater Spotted Dogfish, also known as the Huss or Large Spotted Dogfish, is the largest of the three, with a brownish-grey body adorned with distinctive brown spots. Its snout is long and pointed, and its dorsal fin is small and triangular, located towards the rear of its body. The Spiny Dogfish, as its name suggests, is characterized by the presence of venomous spines along its dorsal and pectoral fins. Its body is greyish-brown, with a series of small, white spots along its sides. Its snout is short and rounded, and its dorsal fin is larger than that of the Greater Spotted Dogfish. The Bull Huss or Nursehound, the smallest of the trio, is a ground-dwelling shark that is often found in shallow waters. Its body is greyish-brown, with a series of brown spots along its sides. Its snout is short and broad, and its dorsal fin is small and positioned towards the rear of its body. MacGillivray's meticulous watercolor illustrations offer a glimpse into the natural history of these fascinating marine creatures, providing valuable insights into their appearance and morphology. These illustrations remain an essential resource for marine biologists, conservationists, and anyone with an interest in the natural world.
