EDITORS COMMENTS
On Monday, 28th August, 1854, at the large room of No. 18, Exhibition Road, South Kensington, London, the splendid model of the parachute or flying machine, which gained notoriety following the late Mons. Le Tur's daring ascent from Cremorne Gardens, Chelsea, will be exhibited to the public. This model replicates the very parachute used by the French aeronaut Francois Letur during his fatal demonstration earlier that year. The public will have the unique opportunity to witness the intricacies of this engineering marvel, which captivated the imagination of Victorian society. Mons. Le Tur, also known as M. Tissandier, had planned to make a manned flight using this parachute, but unfortunately, during a test jump on 15th August, 1854, at Cremorne Gardens, the chute failed to open properly, resulting in his tragic demise. Despite the tragic outcome, the public's fascination with flight and the potential of parachutes remained undeterred. The model, which will be displayed in all its glory, offers a glimpse into the technological advancements of the time and the pioneering spirit that drove individuals to push the boundaries of human exploration. The exhibit is a testament to the enduring allure of aviation and the spirit of innovation that continues to inspire us today.
