Start of Major Woods Unlucky Flight - Receiving a blessing

Major J C P Wood and Captain C C Wyllie met with misfortune during their preliminary flight from Eastchurch to Limerick, whence they intended to cross the Atlantic from west to east. The engine stopped, due to an air-lock in the fuel pipe twelve miles out over the Irish Sea. The turned and descended to Church Bay, Anglesey where the pilots were rescued and the aircraft later salvaged. This photograph shows the two pilots and their aircraft being blessed by a priest prior to departure. Date: 1919

EDITORS COMMENTS
In this evocative photograph from 1919, two brave aviators, Major J C P Wood and Captain C C Wyllie, receive a blessing from a vicar prior to their ill-fated attempt to cross the Atlantic Ocean from west to east, departing from Eastchurch in England. The image captures a moment of hope and determination, as the pilots prepare for the monumental challenge that lies ahead, oblivious to the misfortune that awaits them. Their preliminary flight from Eastchurch to Limerick was intended to be a stepping stone towards their ultimate goal of becoming the first to fly across the Atlantic. However, their journey was cut short when the engine of their aircraft, twelve miles out over the Irish Sea, was afflicted by an air-lock in the fuel pipe. Undeterred by the setback, the resourceful pilots turned back towards land and successfully made an emergency landing at Church Bay, Anglesey. Despite the misfortune that had befallen them, the indomitable spirit of aviation was not deterred. In this photograph, the pilots and their aircraft are bathed in the soft light of a bygone era, as they receive the blessing of the vicar. The image is a poignant reminder of the courage and resilience of early aviators, who faced numerous challenges in their quest to conquer the skies and push the boundaries of human achievement. This photograph, taken in 1919, is a testament to the spirit of adventure and the unwavering determination of those who dared to dream of flying across the vast expanse of the Atlantic Ocean. It is a powerful reminder of the importance of hope, faith, and the human spirit, even in the face of adversity.
