EDITORS COMMENTS
This exquisite limestone stela, dating back to approximately 1850 BC, showcases the 12th Dynasty Egyptian couple, Sennebkay and his wife, in a scene of marital bliss and devotion. The couple is depicted standing before an offering table, laden with an array of food and drink, symbolizing their continued provision and sustenance. The left side of the stela features an offering formula, which lists the various goods and offerings presented to the deities, including beer, bread, and cattle. The offerings were intended to ensure the well-being and prosperity of the couple in the afterlife. The right side of the stela is adorned with a hymn to the Egyptian gods Wepwawet and Osiris. Wepwawet, the god of the dead and the god of the desert, was believed to guide the deceased through the afterlife. Osiris, the god of the underworld and the god of the dead, was the ruler of the afterlife and the judge of the dead. The intricately carved hieroglyphs on the stela demonstrate the advanced writing system used by the ancient Egyptians, which allowed them to record history, religious texts, and administrative information. The stela is a testament to the rich cultural heritage and artistic achievements of the Middle Kingdom period in ancient Egypt. This precious artifact is now housed in the British Museum in London, England, where it continues to captivate and inspire visitors from around the world.
