EDITORS COMMENTS
Through a Doctor's Eyes: A Page of Celebrities Drawn by Osteopath and Gifted Amateur Artist, Doctor Stephen Ward (1912-1963) This image showcases a collection of sketches by the enigmatic Doctor Stephen Ward, as featured in The Illustrated London News in 1960. Displayed at the Legatt Brothers gallery in July of that year, these sketches were a testament to Ward's unique talent, which he often offered as a gesture of goodwill to his celebrity patients. The sketches depicted here include portraits of notable figures such as the Right Honorable Hugh Gaitskell, Prime Minister Harold Macmillan, M.P Duncan Sandys, Lord Boothby, Sophia Loren, Douglas Fairbanks, Sir Stanley Spencer, Sir Alan Herbert, and Derick Heathcoat Amory. Ward's uncanny ability to capture the essence of his subjects in charcoal and pencil was truly remarkable. Following his involvement in the Profumo affair, which came to public prominence in 1963, Ward's life took a tragic turn. The scandal, which involved Ward and several high-profile individuals, ultimately led him to take his own life. These sketches, however, serve as a poignant reminder of Ward's artistic prowess and the unique bond he shared with the celebrities he sketched. Ward's talent extended beyond the realm of medicine, offering a glimpse into the lives of the famous and influential figures of the 1960s through the eyes of a doctor and artist. This image is a historical record of a bygone era, showcasing the charisma and charm of the celebrities of the 1960s, as well as the extraordinary talent of the man behind the sketches, Stephen Ward.
