EDITORS COMMENTS
Anthony Frederick Wilding, the charismatic and talented New Zealand tennis player, is captured in this striking photograph as he serves at the prestigious Wimbledon Championships in 1905. At just 22 years old, Wilding was already making a name for himself in the world of tennis. In this particular match, he faced the American player Clothier, and despite being two sets down, he managed to stage an impressive comeback. However, his journey to the title came to an end in the quarter finals, where he was defeated by the experienced Arthur Gore. Standing tall and athletic, Wilding's good looks and genial personality made him a hugely popular sporting star. His success continued, and he went on to win the Wimbledon Men's Championship an impressive three years in a row from 1910 to 1912. The excitement and anticipation surrounding his matches were so great that ladies were reported to have fainted due to the rush of the crowd. Tragically, Wilding's tennis career came to an abrupt end in 1914 when he was defeated by the Australian Norman Brookes in straight sets. The First World War soon followed, and Wilding, who had enlisted in the New Zealand Expeditionary Force, lost his life near Neuve Chapelle, France, on 9 May 1915, during the Battle of Aubers Ridge. This poignant image captures a moment in time, showcasing Wilding's skill, determination, and the beginning of his remarkable tennis legacy.
