EDITORS COMMENTS
This exquisite tapestry, dating back to approximately 1470, is the sixth piece in a series depicting scenes from the legendary Trojan War. Created in the Flemish city of Tournai, it is attributed to the Master of the Coëtivy Workshop, specifically Henry or Conrard Vulcop. The scene portrayed in this tapestry is a significant moment in the epic tale, showing an interview between Hector, the Trojan prince, and Achilles, the legendary Greek warrior. The peaceful conversation is juxtaposed with the chaotic battlefield outside their tents, where Greeks and Trojans clash in fierce combat. The intricate design is woven from wool and silk threads, with six to seven threads used per centimeter. This meticulous attention to detail is characteristic of the Flemish art of the time, which was renowned for its high-quality tapestries. The tapestry was later brought to Spain and is now housed in the Cathedral Museum of Zamora. The interview between Hector and Achilles is a pivotal moment in the Iliad, an ancient Greek epic poem attributed to Homer. During their conversation, Hector attempts to persuade Achilles to return Patroclus' armor, which had been taken from him in battle. Achilles, still grieving for his friend, refuses, leading to Hector's eventual death in battle. This tapestry series, which includes seven pieces in total, is a testament to the artistic skill and craftsmanship of the Master of the Coëtivy Workshop. It offers a glimpse into the rich history and mythology of ancient Greece, and its preservation in the Cathedral Museum of Zamora ensures that future generations can continue to appreciate its beauty and historical significance.
