EDITORS COMMENTS
This striking handcolored copperplate engraving depicts a Two-horned Rhino, also known as the Black Rhino (Diceros bicornis), as it was depicted in the pages of The Naturalist's Pocket Magazine; or, Complete Cabinet of the Curiosities and Beauties of Nature, published by Harrison in London between 1798 and 1802. The Black Rhino is one of the two extant species of rhinoceros, the other being the White Rhino. This powerful and majestic creature is easily identified by its hooked, thick, and armored skin, and the two prominent horns on its snout. The Black Rhino, native to eastern and southern Africa, is known for its aggressive behavior and acute sense of smell. It is a browsing herbivore, feeding on leaves, twigs, and shoots. The engraving accurately captures the animal's muscular build, with its large, powerful legs and broad shoulders. The Black Rhino's ears are also depicted in their characteristic folded position, which they use to regulate their body temperature. This illustration is a testament to the meticulous attention to detail and scientific accuracy that characterized natural history publications of the late 18th and early 19th centuries. The image was produced using the copperplate engraving technique, which involved etching the design onto a copper plate and then inking and printing it onto paper. The handcoloring adds a vibrant and lifelike quality to the image. The Naturalist's Pocket Magazine was a popular and influential publication during this period, providing a platform for the dissemination of knowledge about the natural world. The magazine's illustrations, produced by skilled engravers and naturalists, were widely circulated and helped to advance scientific understanding of the natural world. This image of the Black Rhino is a prime example of the high-quality illustrations that graced the pages of such publications and continues to captivate and inspire us today.
