VAD Ambulances at Quex Park
The two Quex Park VAD Ambulances are parked outside the front of Quex House. A stretcher is being unloaded from Q1, while Q2 alongside is closed up. Supervising the removal of the stretcher is Major PHG Powell-Cotton, VAD Transport Officer for Thanet. The two Quex Park ambulances were converted from two of Major Powell-Cottons cars - a Delauney Bellville and a Renault, in September 1914 and were used as ambulances throughout the War. The Quex Park VAD Hospital opened on 15 October 1914 and closed on 31 January 1919. The hospital was run by Kent/178, the Birchington Detachment. The Commandant was Hannah Powell-Cotton (1881-1964), wife of Major Percy HG Powell-Cotton (1866-1940) of Quex Park, founder of the Powell-Cotton Museum. Date: 1918

This evocative photograph captures the scene outside Quex House in 1918, where two Voluntary Aid Detachment (VAD) ambulances are parked. Major PHG Powell-Cotton, the VAD Transport Officer for Thanet, supervises the removal of a stretcher from Q1, while Q2 remains closed up. These ambulances were once luxury cars belonging to Major and Mrs. Powell-Cotton - a Delauney Bellville and a Renault - which were converted into ambulances in September 1914. The Quex Park VAD Hospital, run by Kent/178, the Birchington Detachment, opened on 15 October 1914 and closed on 31 January 1919. The Commandant of the hospital was Hannah Powell-Cotton, wife of Major Percy HG Powell-Cotton, who was also the founder of the Powell-Cotton Museum. The ambulances served valiantly throughout the war, providing essential medical support to the wounded and injured.
