EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative photograph captures Wunstorf Airfield near Hanover in the British controlled zone of Germany during the Berlin Airlift of 1948. Amidst the ruins of post-war Europe, a large number of Dakota and York airplanes are lined up, ready for use in the historic operation to supply food and essentials to the 2.5 million inhabitants of West Berlin. In April 1948, Stalin, the Soviet Union's leader, imposed a land blockade on all supplies from Western Europe to West Berlin, in an attempt to assert control over the city. The blockade was a significant challenge to the Western Allies, who responded with an enormous airlift operation. For the next year, planes flew day and night from airfields in Western Europe, including Wunstorf, to deliver much-needed supplies to the beleaguered city. The success of the Berlin Airlift was a turning point in the Cold War, demonstrating the resolve and determination of the Western Allies to protect their interests and uphold their commitment to the people of West Berlin. In May 1949, Stalin conceded defeat and lifted the land blockade, marking the end of this significant chapter in European history. This photograph offers a glimpse into a pivotal moment in history, showcasing the determination and resilience of those involved in the Berlin Airlift, and the importance of international cooperation in times of crisis.
