EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative photograph captures a moment of resilience and resourcefulness during the Home Front of World War II. In 1942, children from the Buckingham Gate Central School in London were among the many evacuees who were sent to the countryside for safety from the bombings. Here, they are seen at Nyman's, the country house of Lieutenant Colonel Messel in Handcross, West Sussex. The children are busy laying herbs out to dry in a converted boiler house, which served as a drying shed. The war had disrupted the usual supply chains, and the community at Nyman's came together to help the evacuees learn essential skills for self-sufficiency. The children's determined expressions and the neatly arranged herbs on the racks speak to their adaptability and the communal spirit that emerged during this challenging time. This photograph offers a poignant reminder of the innovative ways that people coped with the hardships of wartime life.
