EDITORS COMMENTS
This black and white lantern slide depicts the mighty Zambezi River, also spelled Zambeze and Zambesi, as it flows along the border between Zambia and Zimbabwe in the late 1890s. The Zambezi is the fourth-longest river in Africa and the largest that empties into the Indian Ocean from the continent. With a length of approximately 3,540 kilometers (2,200 mi), the river has its source in Zambia and passes through eastern Angola, along the eastern border of Namibia, and the northern border of Botswana. The river then continues to flow along the border between Zambia and Zimbabwe before entering Mozambique and eventually emptying into the Indian Ocean. This stunning image offers a glimpse into the past of British South Africa during the late 19th century, a time when European powers were exploring and colonizing the African continent. The Zambezi River played a significant role in the region's history, facilitating trade, transportation, and the expansion of European influence. This lantern slide is part of the Boswell Collection, Box 288, held by Mary Evans Prints Online.
