Laurence Olivier (Later, Lord Olivier.) Born Dorking, Surrey, 22nd May, 1907.Married three times, to Jill Esmond, Vivien Leigh (1940-1960 div.) and Joan Plowwright. 1930- film debut in " too many crooks" Series of roles in classic and modern plays on the London stage brought great critical acclaim over the years. Produced and directed plays at the Old Viv in particular. 1941-44, served in Fleet Air Arm, mainly in entertainment capacity, 1944-49, director of the Old Vic Company; 1945- directed first film, the hugely patriotic, " Henry V" ; 1965-73- Director of the emerging National Theatre. In total Olivier received nine Academy Award nominations and one Best Actor award for Hamlet in 1948, not to mention numerous other awards. Knighted- 1947. Made a peer- 1970 (the first actor to be given this distinction.

Sir Laurence and Lady Olivier bid farewell to St James's Theatre after its final performance before demolition in 1957. Sir Laurence Olivier, later known as Lord Olivier, was born in Dorking, Surrey on May 22nd, 1907. Throughout his illustrious career, he married three times - Jill Esmond, Vivien Leigh (divorced in 1960), and Joan Plowwright. In the early years of his career, Olivier made his film debut in "Too Many Crooks" in 1930. However, it was his remarkable performances on the London stage that garnered him immense critical acclaim. He produced and directed plays at the Old Vic Theatre with great success. During World War II, from 1941 to 1944, Olivier served in the Fleet Air Arm primarily for entertainment purposes. In 1945, he directed his first film "Henry V" which received widespread praise for its patriotic theme. Olivier's contributions to the arts were recognized with numerous awards throughout his lifetime. He received nine Academy Award nominations and won Best Actor for his iconic portrayal of Hamlet in 1948. In addition to these accolades, he was knighted in 1947 and became a peer - the first actor to receive such an honor -in1970.
