Animals: Chimpanzees: When you re a baby chimp, you have to hang on like grim death
Animals: Chimpanzees: When you re a baby chimp, you have to hang on like grim death to your mum or you ll lose her- and Chimp " Meg" is not the best of mothers, for all " Meg s" babies up to now have been brought up by humans - she just ignored them. But with her new friend Chimp Jane (the both had babies at the same time) and Janes good influence as a mum, Meg has been shown the way and she is keeping her baby now. Meg has a few unmotherly habits like carrying her baby Sue upside down and dropping her, but both Sue and Janes baby Kate are both a credit to their mums. Little Kate is the baby that hangs on to Janes back. Meg carries her baby slung underneath or in her arms, and, in on picture, upside down (all you can see are little Sues feet where her head should be). Chester Zoo, where they live, have had great success with chimpanzees - the two new babies make twenty, which is a success story. But most of the credit goes to the Chimpanzees, even to careless mums like Meg. April 1971

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures a heartwarming moment in the lives of chimpanzees at Chester Zoo. The image showcases the delicate bond between a baby chimp named Sue and her mother, Meg. In the animal kingdom, clinging onto your mother is crucial for survival, and little Sue knows this all too well. Meg, known for her lackluster maternal instincts in the past, has found an unlikely ally in Chimp Jane. Both mothers gave birth around the same time, and Jane's nurturing influence seems to have rubbed off on Meg. Thanks to Jane's guidance, Meg has finally embraced her role as a caring mother. Although Meg still exhibits some unorthodox behaviors like carrying Sue upside down and occasionally dropping her (much to everyone's amusement), both Sue and Jane's baby Kate are thriving under their mothers' care. Little Kate can be seen confidently hanging onto Jane's back while Sue clings tightly underneath or cradled in Meg's arms - even appearing upside down in one snapshot! Chester Zoo takes great pride in its success with chimpanzees; these two new additions bring their total count to twenty chimps – truly an achievement worth celebrating! However, it is important to acknowledge that credit must also be given to these incredible creatures themselves – even those like Meg who may not fit society's definition of an ideal mother. This photograph serves as a reminder of nature's resilience and beauty within every living being at Chester Zoo during April 1971.
