EDITORS COMMENTS
This print takes us back in time to the golden era of rail travel, specifically promoting the scenic beauty of Sheephaven in Donegal, Northern Ireland. Produced by the London, Midland & Scottish Railway (LMS) between 1923 and 1947, this poster was designed by renowned artist Norman Wilkinson. Wilkinson's artistic prowess shines through as he captures the idyllic charm of Sheephaven with remarkable precision. The rolling hills and lush green countryside create a picturesque backdrop for this railway advertisement. It is evident that his background as a marine painter influenced his ability to depict landscapes so beautifully. Having studied art at Portsmouth and Southsea Schools of Art, Wilkinson became well-known for designing posters not only for LMS but also for other prominent railway companies such as LNWR and SR. His talent did not go unnoticed as he organized the Royal Academy series of posters for LMR in 1924. The National Railway Museum has preserved this stunning piece from their Pictorial Collection, allowing us to appreciate both the artistic brilliance behind it and its historical significance in promoting rail travel during that era. As we gaze upon this print, we are transported back in time to an age when train journeys were seen as adventurous escapes into breathtaking landscapes like Sheephaven.
