A row of Class 55 Deltic diesel locomotives built by English Electric in 1961-1962

A row of Class 55 Deltic diesel locomotives built by English Electric in 1961-1962. The fleet of 22 Deltics did the work of 55 A4 steam locomotives and cut an hour off the working timetable. Each powered by two Napier Deltic engines, these locomotives were the most powerful diesels ever built when they were introduced. The Deltics continued in service until 1978, and were then transferred to York Depot where they were used until 1982

National Railway Museum is the home of iconic locomotives. Our historic prints reflect the age and quality of the original artwork we hold to preserve their artistic character, including authentic colour reproduction, marks and creases.

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases a magnificent row of Class 55 Deltic diesel locomotives, which were built by English Electric between 1961 and 1962. Standing tall with their distinctive insignia and logo, these powerful machines revolutionized the railway industry during their time. With each locomotive equipped with two Napier Deltic engines, they became the most potent diesel engines ever constructed upon their introduction. The fleet of 22 Deltics proved to be an incredible asset as they efficiently performed the work equivalent to that of 55 A4 steam locomotives. Their exceptional performance allowed for a remarkable reduction of one hour in the working timetable, enhancing efficiency and reliability on British railways. Although serving until 1978, these iconic locomotives found themselves transferred to York Depot where they continued their dedicated service until 1982.
