EDITORS COMMENTS
This vintage print captures a fascinating glimpse into the world of tobacco advertising in 1924. The image showcases three tiered sections of Navy Cut Medium cigarettes by Players, each section displaying packs and boxes adorned with the iconic Castle trademark and sailor in a life-buoy trade mark. The back section stands tall, featuring packs of cigarettes and a box with the distinctive Castle logo. Above it, a banner proudly bears the text "PLAYER S", emphasizing the brand's identity. In the middle section, we see a similar arrangement of packs and another box with the recognizable trademarks. Finally, in the front section, which is positioned lowest, various cigarette packs are displayed - one open pack revealing two collecting cards. Although time has taken its toll on this display piece - with broken sides and detachment at the back - its historical significance remains intact. On closer inspection, we discover a handwritten note on the reverse side reading "C117" alongside printed instructions for proper usage: "TO DISPLAY // HOLD BY TOP AND // PRESS DOWN ON TO // COUNTER // N. B. // if this display is // required to be closed // bring two struts into // centre first". This photograph offers us an intriguing window into Nottingham's past while showcasing an important artifact from tobacco advertising history – all without any mention or intention of commercial use.
