The onopordum acanthium or Scottish thistle is seen growing in Finsbury Park in London, June 15, 2014. The Scottish thistle is the national symbol of Scotland and inspired the mascot for this years Commonwealth Games in Glasgow. Scottish separatists are closing the gap on their unionist rivals as a September independence referendum draws nearer, according to a poll. But pollster TNS said it would still be a " major task" for them to draw level in time. In a poll of 995 adults, TNS found that support for the pro-independence campaign had grown by two points to 32 percent compared with last month, while the campaign to reject independence had slipped back a point to 41 percent. EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the majestic onopordum acanthium, also known as the Scottish thistle, flourishing in Finsbury Park, London. The vibrant purple petals of this iconic flower stand out against a backdrop of lush greenery, symbolizing resilience and strength. As the national emblem of Scotland, it has become synonymous with Scottish identity and heritage. The significance of the Scottish thistle extends beyond its natural beauty. It served as an inspiration for the mascot of the 2014 Commonwealth Games held in Glasgow. This event celebrated not only athletic prowess but also Scotland's rich cultural heritage. Against this picturesque scene lies a political undertone. With a looming independence referendum approaching in September, Scottish separatists are gaining ground on their unionist rivals according to recent polls. TNS pollsters suggest that while support for pro-independence has grown by two points to reach 32 percent compared to last month, there is still much work ahead for them to catch up with those opposing independence. In light of these developments, Reuters photographer Suzanne Plunkett embarked on a visual exploration capturing close-up images depicting various objects associated with Scotland – from food and drink to everyday items – providing insight into its distinct culture and traditions. Through this photograph taken on June 15th, 2014 by Suzanne Plunkett from Reuters Images emerges not just an exquisite portrayal of nature's wonders but also a reminder of Scotland's ongoing journey towards self-determination amidst shifting political tides.
