Retreat Rocks with children playing on the boat The Ocean Waif, Perranporth, Cornwall. Around 1925

Cornishman and amateur photographer, Major Arthur William Gill, was well known in Cornwall and elsewhere during the 1920s and 1930s for his presentations of stills and cine film to many groups including The Royal Institution of Cornwall, Royal Cornwall Polytechnic Society and the London Cornish Society. The quarter plate slides which he took prolifically with his ordinary camera are, in some cases, painted by his own hand to great effect

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures a moment of pure joy and innocence amidst the rugged beauty of Retreat Rocks in Perranporth, Cornwall. Taken around 1925 by Major Arthur William Gill, a renowned Cornishman and amateur photographer, this image showcases children gleefully playing on the boat named The Ocean Waif. The scene is filled with laughter as these young adventurers embark on imaginary voyages across the vast expanse of the ocean. Their imaginations run wild as they navigate through imaginary storms and conquer mythical sea creatures. The boat itself stands proudly against the backdrop of towering cliffs, symbolizing both their dreams and resilience. Major Gill's talent for capturing such candid moments is evident in this photograph.
