EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures a moment of pure joy and innocence amidst the rugged beauty of Retreat Rocks in Perranporth, Cornwall. Taken around 1925 by Major Arthur William Gill, a renowned Cornishman and amateur photographer, this image showcases children gleefully playing on the boat named The Ocean Waif. The scene is filled with laughter as these young adventurers embark on imaginary voyages across the vast expanse of the ocean. Their imaginations run wild as they navigate through imaginary storms and conquer mythical sea creatures. The boat itself stands proudly against the backdrop of towering cliffs, symbolizing both their dreams and resilience. Major Gill's talent for capturing such candid moments is evident in this photograph. His quarter plate slides were taken prolifically with an ordinary camera but transformed into works of art through his own hand-painted touches. This artistic flair adds depth to an already mesmerizing composition. During the 1920s and 1930s, Major Gill shared his passion for photography by presenting stills and cine film to various groups including The Royal Institution of Cornwall, Royal Cornwall Polytechnic Society, and the London Cornish Society.
