Coast south of Penally Point, St Juliot, near Boscastle, Cornwall. 1902

Willapark Lookout can be seen towards the top right hand side of the photograph. The lookout was built in the early 1800s as a summer house by the local landowner Thomas Rickard Avery. It was later used by the Board of Trade as a lookout to help prevent smuggling and, up until the 1970s, as a coastguard lookout. It was then maintained as a folly under National Trust ownership until 2002 when it was leased to Boscastle National Coastwatch Institution. Photographer: Herbert Hughes

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print takes us back to the picturesque coast south of Penally Point, St Juliot, near Boscastle in Cornwall. Captured in 1902 by photographer Herbert Hughes, it offers a glimpse into the rich history and natural beauty of this coastal region. In the distance, towards the top right-hand side of the photograph, we can spot Willapark Lookout standing proudly against the rugged landscape. Originally built as a summer house by local landowner Thomas Rickard Avery in the early 1800s, this structure later served an important role in preventing smuggling activities along these shores. The Board of Trade repurposed it as a lookout post and it continued to function as such until the 1970s when it became a coastguard lookout. Under National Trust ownership since then, Willapark Lookout has been lovingly maintained as a folly - an architectural curiosity that adds charm to its surroundings. In 2002, it was leased to Boscastle National Coastwatch Institution who now operates from this unique vantage point. Hughes' photograph not only captures the stunning coastline but also serves as a testament to human ingenuity and our efforts to protect these precious landscapes throughout history. It is through images like these that we are reminded of Cornwall's enduring allure and its deep connection with both nature and heritage.
