Comparison of animal feet, historical art

Comparison of animals foot anatomy. Coloured historical artwork of the bones of the foot of an elephant, hippopotamus, rhinoceros, ox and horse. The number of weight-bearing toes reduces from left to right. In the elephant, the inner toe (marked I) is reduced and contains fewer bones than the others. This toe is seen to be greatly reduced or absent in the feet of the other animals. The number of toes is a characteristic feature of two mammal orders; the Artiodactlya (even-toed ungulates such as the hippo, ox, pig and deer) and Perissodactlya (odd-toed ungulates such as the rhino, horse and tapir). This artwork was published in The Human Foot and The Human Hand by G M Humphry, in 1861

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases a fascinating comparison of animal feet through historical art. The colored artwork depicts the intricate bone structure of the feet belonging to an elephant, hippopotamus, rhinoceros, ox, and horse. As we move from left to right in the image, we observe a gradual reduction in weight-bearing toes. In particular, the inner toe (marked I) of the elephant stands out as it contains fewer bones compared to its counterparts. Interestingly, this toe appears greatly reduced or even absent in the other animals' feet. This variation in toe count is a defining characteristic of two mammal orders: Artiodactyla (even-toed ungulates like hippos and deer) and Perissodactyla (odd-toed ungulates such as horses and rhinos). Published by G. M Humphry in 1861 as part of "The Human Foot and The Human Hand" this artwork offers us a glimpse into zoological anatomy during the 19th century. It highlights not only differences between these five creatures but also sheds light on their biological evolution. With its vibrant colors and meticulous detailing, this print serves as a testament to both scientific curiosity and artistic expression. It invites us to marvel at nature's diversity while appreciating how each species has adapted over time for optimal locomotion.
