HST image of star birth in galaxy NGC 1808

Star birth. Hubble space telescope (HST) coloured combined infrared and optical image of star birth regions at the heart of galaxy NGC 1808. The image has been coloured so that cooler regions, consisting of older stars, appear yellow, while hot new star birth regions are blue. There is an exceptional amount of star birth activity in this galaxy. The dark regions are thick lanes of gas and dust, which most likely obscure even more star birth areas. Star birth typically occurs in regions of dense gas and dust. This galaxy is around 40, 000, 000 light-years away. Data obtained on 14th August 1997

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the incredible phenomenon of star birth in the galaxy NGC 1808. Captured by the Hubble Space Telescope (HST), this coloured image combines infrared and optical data to provide a mesmerizing view of star birth regions at the heart of the galaxy. The vibrant colors in this image serve as a visual representation of temperature variations within NGC 1808. Cooler regions, inhabited by older stars, are depicted in a striking yellow hue, while areas experiencing hot new star births appear vividly blue. The sheer abundance of star birth activity observed here is truly exceptional. As we explore this galactic masterpiece further, we encounter dark lanes composed of gas and dust that obscure even more hidden pockets where stars are being born. These thick lanes add an element of mystery to the already awe-inspiring scene. It is important to note that star birth predominantly occurs within dense regions filled with gas and dust. This photograph serves as a testament to the intricate relationship between these elements and stellar formation. Situated approximately 40 million light-years away from us, NGC 1808 remains distant yet accessible through scientific exploration. This particular data was obtained on August 14th, 1997 - forever freezing this momentous event for our admiration. Courtesy of Science Photo Library, this remarkable print offers viewers an opportunity to marvel at one aspect of our vast universe's ongoing evolution: the miraculous process known as star birth.
