EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures a historic moment in space exploration - the last servicing Extravehicular Activity (EVA) of the Hubble Space Telescope (HST) during mission STS-61. The immense HST, a symbol of mankind's curiosity and ambition, looms large in the cargo bay of Shuttle Endeavour. Astronaut Story Musgrave stands at the end of the Remote Manipulator System arm, holding covers for the newly-replaced magnetometers. Meanwhile, astronaut Jeffrey Hoffman can be seen in the payload bay below. During this crucial mission, which took place from 2nd to 13th December 1993, five spacewalks were conducted by an exceptional crew who undertook various tasks to ensure that Hubble could continue its groundbreaking observations. Among these tasks were replacing one of HST's cameras and solar panels and installing a corrective optics package. The image not only showcases human ingenuity but also highlights our relentless pursuit of knowledge about our universe. It serves as a testament to humanity's ability to overcome challenges and push boundaries beyond Earth's atmosphere. This remarkable photograph is part of Science Photo Library's collection dedicated to astronomical wonders and scientific achievements. It reminds us that through collaborative efforts between scientists, engineers, and astronauts like those involved in mission STS-61, we are able to unlock mysteries hidden among distant stars and galaxies with instruments like Hubble Space Telescope
