Mussel glue threads, SEM

Mussel glue. Coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of the byssus (glue threads) of a common mussel (Mytilus edulis). These threads are composed of a protein glue, which binds the mussel to rocks. The glue is water-resistant and stronger than epoxy resins. Most glues cannot bind wet surfaces, and the mussel protein could be used as a glue in the body and in underwater construction. This mussel is a sessile bivalve mollusc that inhabits coastal waters, where it filters tiny food particles from the water. Magnification: x81 at 6x7cm size

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the intricate beauty of mussel glue threads, as captured through a scanning electron microscope (SEM). These threads, also known as byssus or beard, are made up of a protein glue that enables mussels to firmly attach themselves to rocks in coastal waters. What makes this glue particularly remarkable is its water-resistant nature and strength, surpassing even epoxy resins commonly used in construction. Unlike most glues that struggle to bind wet surfaces, the mussel protein adhesive could potentially revolutionize both underwater construction and medical applications where bonding on wet surfaces is required. The common mussel (Mytilus edulis) depicted here is a sessile bivalve mollusc found in coastal areas. It sustains itself by filtering tiny food particles from the surrounding water. The magnified image reveals the vertical arrangement of these sticky threads which serve as an essential lifeline for mussels. Beyond its scientific significance, this photograph serves as a reminder of nature's incredible ability to inspire innovation. Biomimetics - drawing inspiration from natural systems - holds immense potential for developing new materials and technologies. As we delve deeper into understanding the secrets hidden within organisms like mussels, we unlock possibilities for creating sustainable solutions that mimic their extraordinary capabilities. This stunning visual representation invites us to appreciate not only the wonders of our natural world but also sparks curiosity about how we can harness its wisdom for human advancement – all through a single snapshot frozen in time by Science Photo Library.
