SEM of earthworm
Common earthworm. Coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of the rear end of a common earthworm (Lumbricus terrestris). The anus (grey, centre left) is found on the earthworms last segment (pygidium). Also visible are the chaetae, tiny thorn-like projections which are used for movement. Adult earthworms can grow up to 30 cm in length. Their diet consists of organic substances in the soil, and their movement helps to break up the soil and improve its aeration. They are thus vital to maintaining the quality of arable soils. Magnification unknown

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the intricate details of a common earthworm, captured through a coloured scanning electron microscope (SEM). The image focuses on the rear end of the earthworm, revealing its fascinating anatomy. At the center left, we can observe the anus in grey color, which is located on the last segment known as pygidium. Additionally, numerous chaetae are visible throughout the image - these tiny thorn-like projections play a crucial role in facilitating movement for this remarkable creature. Adult common earthworms have an impressive potential to grow up to 30 cm in length. They primarily feed on organic substances found within soil and their constant burrowing helps break up and aerate it. These actions are vital for maintaining high-quality arable soils that support plant growth and contribute to overall ecosystem health. The magnification used to capture this mesmerizing SEM image remains unknown but allows us to appreciate nature's intricacy at a microscopic level. This photograph serves as a reminder of how even seemingly small organisms like earthworms play significant roles in our environment.
