EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the intricate details of a Vine weevil larva, captured using a coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM). The Black vine weevil larva, scientifically known as Otiorhynchus sulcatus, is notorious for its destructive nature as it attacks various plants such as yew, rhododendron, azalea, laurel, juniper, grape, holly, strawberry and many others. The image reveals the larva's orange mouthparts on its head which it uses to feed on roots. This feeding behavior causes severe damage to plants during its larval stage compared to the adult weevils that primarily consume leaves. In autumn, the larvae hatch and then burrow into the soil throughout winter. By springtime when they reach maturity at about one centimeter in length, they transform into their adult form. With a magnification of x12 when printed 10cm high, this photograph allows us to appreciate the minute intricacies of this young insect's anatomy. It serves as a reminder of both the beauty and complexity found within nature's smallest creatures. Captured by Science Photo Library - an expert in scientific imagery - this stunning print not only appeals to enthusiasts of zoology and entomology but also provides valuable insight into pest management strategies for those involved in agriculture or gardening.
