Woodcut of 16th Century Swiss physician / alchemist
Woodcut of the 16th century Swiss physician & alchemist, Theophrastus Bombastus von Hohenheim, better known as Paracelsus (1493-1541). It was made by August Hirschvogel, 1540. Paracelsus became professor of medicine at Basel University in 1527, but was forced to leave the position in 1528. He publicly burnt the works of Galen & Avicenna, early physicians whose works dominated the development of medicine. Paracelsus belived that the practice of alchemy should be directed towards the preparation of medicines for curing disease & not as a means for manufacturing gold. His views were eventually developed into a system called iatrochemistry

EDITORS COMMENTS
This woodcut print showcases the esteemed 16th-century Swiss physician and alchemist, Theophrastus Bombastus von Hohenheim, famously known as Paracelsus. Crafted by August Hirschvogel in 1540, this artwork immortalizes Paracelsus' significant contributions to the field of medicine during his time. Paracelsus rose to prominence when he assumed the role of professor of medicine at Basel University in 1527. However, his unorthodox beliefs and practices led to his expulsion from this prestigious position just a year later. In an act that symbolized his defiance against traditional medical authorities, Paracelsus publicly burned the works of Galen and Avicenna - influential physicians whose teachings had dominated medical development until then. What set Paracelsus apart was his conviction that alchemy should be harnessed for creating medicines rather than solely pursuing gold production. He firmly believed that alchemical knowledge could be used to cure diseases effectively. This groundbreaking perspective eventually evolved into a comprehensive system called iatrochemistry. In this remarkable woodcut portrait, we witness Paracelsus' commanding presence and determination reflected through every line etched on paper. His piercing gaze hints at both wisdom and rebellion against established norms. Through this image, we are transported back in time to witness the revolutionary ideas that shaped modern medicine.
