EDITORS COMMENTS
In this photo print, taken on September 17,1936, at Brooklands race track, the excitement of the upcoming international 500 miles race is palpable. As famous racing drivers gather for their final practice session before the highly anticipated event on September 19th, one driver stands out amongst the crowd. Meet Charlie Dodson, a smaller driver with big dreams and an even smaller car. Pictured alongside him is his prized possession - the new Austin 7. Despite its diminutive size, this tiny vehicle has been accepted by the British Racing Drivers Club as it boasts an impressive lap speed of 100 miles per hour. The image captures a moment in history when racing was dominated by men but also saw several women taking part in these exhilarating competitions. The determination and skill displayed by all participants are evident as they prepare to push themselves to their limits during what promises to be the fastest race of the season. This photograph not only transports us back to a time between two world wars but also serves as a reminder of how far we have come in terms of technological advancements and gender equality within motorsports. Preserved through monochrome imagery, it offers us a glimpse into an era that continues to fascinate enthusiasts worldwide. Courtesy of TopFoto. co. uk's extensive collection documenting Europeana photography from various periods, this snapshot captures both the thrill and elegance associated with motor racing in the thirties – forever etching itself into our collective memory.
