EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases a zoopraxiscope disc from 1893, created by the renowned photographer Eadweard Muybridge. The zoopraxiscope was an innovative device that revolutionized motion picture display and is often considered the precursor to modern movie projectors. By projecting rapidly rotating glass disks in quick succession, it gave viewers the illusion of movement. Muybridge's early zoopraxiscope discs featured stop-motion images painted onto the glass as silhouettes. However, this particular print captures a later series of discs made between 1892 and 1894. These discs employed outline drawings that were photographically printed onto them before being meticulously hand-colored. What makes these animated images truly remarkable is their complexity. They depict intricate combinations of animal and human movements, showcasing Muybridge's mastery in capturing various sequences with precision and artistry. It is fascinating to note that Muybridge's zoopraxiscope served as a major inspiration for Thomas Edison and William Kennedy Dickson when they developed the Kinetoscope—the first commercially successful film exhibition system. This stunning print not only offers us a glimpse into the history of motion pictures but also highlights Muybridge's pioneering contributions to photography and his profound impact on subsequent advancements in cinematic technology.
