Cellarette, firm of Duncan Phyfe and Son (1768-1854), c

500295 Cellarette, firm of Duncan Phyfe and Son (1768-1854), c.1840 (chiefly rosewood veneer with pine and poplar secondary woods) by American School, (19th century); h:59.40 w:72.40 d:50.20 cm; Cleveland Museum of Art, OH, USA; (add.info.: Easily the most famous American furniture maker, Duncan Phyfe (born Scotland, 1768-1854) gave his name to New York furniture that is similar to English Sheraton pieces of the early 19th century-characterized by simple designs, straight lines, thin legs, and classical ornamentation. Despite the fashionable success enjoyed by his work, Phyfe responded to stylistic changes, and by the 1830s had evolved a more severe mode that has been termed the " Grecian plain style." This sideboard and its cellarette (a cabinet for storing wine or liquor) are superb examples of that taste, relying for their effect on relatively simple structural forms with ornamentation largely limited to the use of boldly patterned rosewood veneers.

EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph showcases a remarkable piece of furniture known as the Cellarette, crafted by the esteemed firm of Duncan Phyfe and Son in the mid-19th century. Measuring 59.40 cm in height, 72.40 cm in width, and 50.20 cm in depth, this exquisite creation resides within the prestigious Cleveland Museum of Art in Ohio, USA. Duncan Phyfe, renowned as America's most celebrated furniture maker, left an indelible mark on New York's design landscape with his elegant craftsmanship reminiscent of English Sheraton pieces from the early 1800s. This particular cellarette exemplifies Phyfe's evolution towards a more austere style referred to as the "Grecian plain style" during the 1830s. Constructed primarily from rosewood veneer with secondary woods made from pine and poplar, this sideboard and its accompanying cabinet were designed to store wine or liquor. The beauty lies not only in their functional purpose but also in their simplicity – characterized by clean lines, slender legs, and classical ornamentation that tastefully accentuates boldly patterned rosewood veneers. As you gaze upon this print captured by Bridgeman Images for Fine Art Finder, take a moment to appreciate how Duncan Phyfe seamlessly blended timeless elegance with practicality through his masterful artistry. This iconic piece serves as a testament to American ingenuity and craftsmanship that continues to captivate admirers even centuries later.
