In 1853 Chobham Camp was the scene of the first large-scale manoeuvres in Britain since the Napoleonic Wars. Unease at RussiaAs ambitions in the Balkans and eastern Mediterranean prompted an increase in British military activity. These preparations proved invaluable in the Crimean War of 1854-1856.

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases a historical moment in British military history. Titled "Chobham, Colonel Hodges, tent Grenadier Guards Encampment" the image captures the essence of the first large-scale manoeuvres in Britain since the Napoleonic Wars. Painted by an unknown artist during the 19th century, this watercolour piece depicts Chobham Camp in 1853. During this time, tensions were rising due to Russia's ambitions in the Balkans and eastern Mediterranean. In response, British military activity increased as preparations for potential conflicts took place. The significance of these manoeuvres became evident during the Crimean War that followed from 1854 to 1856. From June to August of that year, Chobham Camp hosted approximately 8,000 men along with horses and guns under Lieutenant-General Sir John Colbourne's command. This spectacle attracted not only large crowds but also royalty and foreign dignitaries who came to witness drill exercises, field operations, and parades on Surrey's heathland. The painting beautifully portrays Colonel Hodges' tent within this encampment while highlighting Queen Victoria's grand tent overlooking a hill nearby. The attention to detail and vibrant colors bring this historic scene back to life. Preserved at London's National Army Museum today, this artwork serves as a testament to both Britain's military preparedness during uncertain times and its rich cultural heritage captured through paintings like these.
