Fleet Street with Temple Bar (Crystal Palace in distance) 1871

Fleet Street in the City of London, from Mitre Court to Temple Bar, with The Temple and River Thames. The narrow and traffic-limiting Temple Bar (one of the historic entrances to the City of London) was removed from this position in 1878 and re-erected at Theobalds Park in Hertfordshire where it remained until 2003: it is now sited at the entrance to Paternoster Square. Engraving from " Collins Illustrated Guide to London and Neighbourhood", price one shilling; published by William Collins, Sons & Company, London, in 1871. In the far distance, the Crystal Palace can be seen on Sydenham Hill whence it was removed from Hyde Park following the Great Exhibition of 1851

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print takes us back to the bustling streets of 19th century London. Fleet Street, a prominent thoroughfare in the City of London, comes alive with activity as people go about their daily lives. The image captures a moment frozen in time, showcasing the city's rich history and vibrant atmosphere. In the foreground, we see pedestrians strolling along the narrow street, dressed in traditional clothing of the era. A cart and covered wagon make their way through the busy traffic, while carriages transport passengers to their destinations. This snapshot of city life offers a glimpse into how transportation operated during this period. The iconic Temple Bar stands proudly at one end of Fleet Street, serving as an entrance to the historic City of London. Although it was later relocated to different sites before finding its current home at Paternoster Square, its significance remains intact. In the distance looms Sydenham Hill's Crystal Palace – a majestic structure that once graced Hyde Park after hosting the Great Exhibition of 1851. Its presence adds grandeur to this already enchanting scene. This beautifully engraved image evokes nostalgia for a bygone era and invites us to imagine what life was like in Victorian England. It serves as both an artistic representation and historical documentation that transports us back in time to experience London's past glory firsthand.
