Brickmaking, Egypt, 1905. Artist: Underwood & Underwood
Brickmaking, Egypt, 1905. We see here modern natives engaged in brickmaking by the same methods that were employed five thousand years ago. The soft mud is being mixed under the feet of a fellah, while another at a table moulds it into bricks. These are taken while still in the moulds and carried to the yard by a third native who gently detaches them from the mould and leaves them to dry in long rows. In spite of the lack of firing they make a very desirable wall. Stereoscopic card. Detail. From a series called Egypt Through the Stereoscope, text by James H Breasted

EDITORS COMMENTS
This photo print, titled "Brickmaking, Egypt, 1905" takes us back in time to witness the ancient craft of brickmaking that has endured for thousands of years. The image showcases modern Egyptian natives engaged in this age-old practice using methods unchanged since ancient times. In the foreground, we see a fellah mixing soft mud under his feet while another native molds it into bricks on a nearby table. These freshly molded bricks are delicately detached from their molds by a third worker and left to dry in long rows within the yard. Surprisingly, despite the absence of firing techniques, these sun-dried bricks prove to be highly desirable as building materials. The photograph is part of a series called "Egypt Through the Stereoscope" and was captured by Underwood & Underwood during the early 20th century. It offers an intriguing glimpse into Egypt's rich history and cultural heritage. The barren desert landscape surrounding the brickmakers adds an air of mystique and highlights the resilience of human craftsmanship amidst challenging geographical conditions. This monochrome stereoscopic card serves as both a historical document and a testament to Egypt's enduring traditions. It invites viewers to appreciate not only the physical ruins scattered across this ancient land but also its vibrant trade and manufacturing practices that have shaped its identity throughout centuries.
