Brooklyn Bridge, New York City, New York, USA, late 19th or early 20th century. Artist: Underwood & Underwood
Brooklyn Bridge, New York City, New York, USA, late 19th or early 20th century. Detail from a stereoscopic card showing the bridge from the New York World Building. Designed by John Augustus Roebling, the Brooklyn Bridge over the East River was heralded as one of the most important construction projects of the 19th century. When completed it was the longest suspension bridge in the world. Roebling died of tetanus in 1869 after his foot was crushed in an accident during construction. His son, Washington, took over as chief engineer, and saw the project to its successful conclusion with the assistance of his wife Emily after Washington himself was incapacitated by an attack of the bends suffered while working below the river bed

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the iconic Brooklyn Bridge in all its grandeur during the late 19th or early 20th century. Taken from a stereoscopic card, it showcases the bridge as seen from the New York World Building, providing a unique perspective of this engineering marvel. Designed by John Augustus Roebling, the Brooklyn Bridge was an ambitious project that marked a significant milestone in civil engineering. Upon completion, it held the title of being the longest suspension bridge in the world. However, tragedy struck when Roebling succumbed to tetanus after an accident during construction. His son Washington took over as chief engineer and with unwavering determination and support from his wife Emily Warren Roebling, he successfully saw through this monumental undertaking. The image not only highlights the architectural beauty of this magnificent structure but also offers glimpses of bustling city life along New York City's waterfront. The towering buildings stand tall against a backdrop of ships docked at wharfs, showcasing how transportation played a vital role in shaping urban landscapes. As we gaze upon this monochrome aerial view captured by Underwood & Underwood, we are transported back to an era where innovation and ambition converged to create enduring landmarks like the Brooklyn Bridge. This photograph is not just a visual representation; it encapsulates history, resilience, and human ingenuity that continue to define New York City even today.
