General View of Monuments Carved into Bedrock with Photographers Dahabieh. Abu Simbel, 1851-1852

General View of Monuments Carved into Bedrock with Photographers Dahabieh. Abu Simbel, 1851-1852. Teynard, a civil engineer, may have learned photography for his 1851-52 tour of Egypt, which he undertook " to study certain questions of personal interest." In 1858 he published his photographic record of ancient sites, the most comprehensive to date, as a book of salted paper prints. Teynard traveled by dahabieh, a small passenger boat visible in this image. He asked his readers to grant some indulgence for photographers carrying out such painstaking work in an arduous locale like Egypt. " A nomad, his working method is always provisional, and the delicate preparations for his photography must be carried out on a small sailing boat rocking in the water, or under a tent standing in the midst of the desert."

EDITORS COMMENTS
This photo print, titled "General View of Monuments Carved into Bedrock with Photographers Dahabieh. Abu Simbel, 1851-1852" offers a glimpse into the remarkable journey undertaken by Félix Teynard, a civil engineer turned photographer. In his quest to explore Egypt's ancient sites and study personal interests, Teynard embarked on an arduous expedition in 1851-52. The image showcases the awe-inspiring monuments carved into bedrock at Abu Simbel while also capturing Teynard's small passenger boat known as dahabieh. This vessel served as his mobile studio and home during this nomadic adventure through Egypt's desert landscapes. Teynard's dedication to his craft is evident in the painstaking efforts required for photography amidst such challenging conditions. He humbly requested indulgence from his readers, acknowledging that working on a rocking boat or under a tent in the midst of the desert demanded delicate preparations. Published in 1858, Teynard's photographic record of ancient Egyptian sites remains one of the most comprehensive accounts to date. The salted paper prints featured in his book provide invaluable insights into Egypt's rich heritage and serve as visual testaments to Teynard's pioneering spirit. This particular print is housed within The Cleveland Museum of Art and represents Félix Teynard’s enduring legacy as both an explorer and photographer. It stands as a testament to human curiosity and determination, reminding us of our capacity to uncover history even under challenging circumstances.
