H.M. Tahitian Consul, Mr. Pritchard... receiving the petition of a native chief, 1844

H.M. Tahitian Consul, Mr. Pritchard, in his official dress, receiving the petition of a native chief, 1844. We gather from the statement of Mr. Josiah Conder, at a meeting held at Finsbury Chapel, Moorfields, on Tuesday evening, that principally to the generosity of Mr. [George] Pritchard is Queen Pomare indebted for aiding her to pay the fine inflicted upon her by the French. It appears that Mr. Pritchard left Tahiti early in 1841, and did not return till 1843: and it was during his absence that those events took place which ended in the dethronement of Queen Pomare. From " Illustrated London News", 1844, Vol I

EDITORS COMMENTS
In this photo print, we are transported back to the year 1844, witnessing a significant moment in history. The image depicts H. M. Tahitian Consul, Mr. Pritchard, adorned in his official dress, receiving a petition from a native chief. This snapshot captures the essence of colonialism and diplomacy during the 19th century. The caption informs us that Mr. Pritchard played a crucial role in aiding Queen Pomare of Tahiti by helping her pay off fines imposed by the French government. It is revealed that he had left Tahiti for two years between 1841 and 1843, during which time events unfolded leading to Queen Pomare's dethronement. This engraving from "Illustrated London News" provides us with valuable insights into the occupation and profession of Mr. Pritchard as a missionary and consul representing Britain in French Polynesia at that time. The image showcases not only historical figures but also highlights cultural elements such as clothing choices reflecting both European influence and traditional Tahitian attire. As we gaze upon this portrait frozen in time, we can't help but ponder on the complexities of imperialism, religion, and international relations prevalent during this era.
