EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures a scene from the comic ballad "The Diverting History of John Gilpin" by William Cowper. In this chaotic moment, we witness John Gilpin being chased by a pack of dogs as his horse gallops out of control. The image, taken in 1878 but printed around 1918, showcases the humor and wit that made this ballad so beloved. John Gilpin, portrayed here as a draper on his journey to Edmonton, finds himself separated from his family after losing control of his horse. Instead of reaching his intended destination, he ends up in Ware, ten miles away. This misadventure is beautifully depicted through the lens of Randolph Caldecott's illustrations. The photograph not only captures the panic and alarm on John Gilpin's face but also highlights the metaphorical concept behind this humorous tale. It symbolizes how life can sometimes spiral out of control despite our best efforts to maintain order. As an iconic figure in British literature and folklore, John Gilpin continues to entertain audiences with his wild ride even centuries later. This image serves as a reminder of both the enduring popularity and timeless appeal of Cowper's work.
