The New Barrack-Hospital, at Scutari, 1854. Creator: Unknown

The New Barrack-Hospital, at Scutari, 1854. Crimean War. Letter to the British government from one of Florence Nightingale's nurses asking for supplies: [I] ask you at once to send us wine, or anything which would be useful for the wounded or dying...There are fifty nurses, all of them exceedingly skilful, and we find our efforts so appreciated by the soldiers as well as by the medical officers, that there is hope that the experiment...of sending women out to do the part which God so evidently assigned to them will be blessed...[The nurses tasks were] assisting the surgeons, when we could, in dressing [the] ghastly wounds, and seeing the poor fellows made as easy as their circumstances would admit of...Wine would be of immense service to some of the nurses just before going into the wards...Warm clothing too...for the convalescents, now the winter is so fast advancing, would be thankfully received'. EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative image captures The New Barrack-Hospital at Scutari during the Crimean War in 1854. The hospital, which was established by Florence Nightingale and her team of dedicated nurses, became a symbol of hope and healing amidst the horrors of war. In this poignant moment, we see the nurses tending to the wounded soldiers, their faces etched with determination and compassion. The makeshift hospital, with its rows of cots and simple furnishings, stands as a testament to the resilience and resourcefulness of those who sought to bring comfort and care to the afflicted. The scene is further brought to life by a letter penned by one of Nightingale's nurses, pleading for essential supplies. "Send us wine, or anything which would be useful for the wounded or dying," she wrote, "There are fifty nurses, all of them exceedingly skilful, and we find our efforts so appreciated by the soldiers as well as by the medical officers, that there is hope that the experiment...of sending women out to do the part which God so evidently assigned to them will be blessed." The nurses' tasks were varied and arduous, from assisting surgeons in dressing ghastly wounds to providing comfort to the dying. "Wine would be of immense service to some of the nurses just before going into the wards," the letter continued, "Warm clothing too for the convalescents, now the winter is so fast advancing, would be thankfully received." This poignant image and letter serve as a powerful reminder of the sacrifices made by the nurses and medical personnel during the Crimean War, and the vital role they played in providing care and comfort to the wounded soldiers. Their tireless efforts not only saved countless lives but also paved the way for the professionalization of nursing as a respected and essential profession.
