Romance of the Three Kingdoms, 1800s. Matsumura Goshun was trained in literati art by Yosa Buson and Maruyama Okyo. Here, he depicted " Oath of the Peach Garden, " a scene from the classic Chinese historical novel Romance of the Three Kingdoms. Matsumuras painting follows the example of Busons Evening Banquet at the Peach and Pear Blossom Garden, inspired by a 16th-century Li Bai poem

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the exquisite artwork of Matsumura Goshun, a renowned Japanese artist from the 18th century. Trained in literati art by Yosa Buson and Maruyama Okyo, Goshun's talent shines through in his depiction of "Oath of the Peach Garden" a scene inspired by the classic Chinese historical novel Romance of the Three Kingdoms. In this mesmerizing painting, Goshun captures a pivotal moment as three legendary warriors - Liu Bei, Guan Yu, and Zhang Fei - become sworn brothers amidst a sea of blooming peach blossom trees. The delicate brushstrokes and vibrant colors bring life to this ancient tale, evoking a sense of camaraderie and honor. Goshun's artistic approach draws inspiration from Buson's Evening Banquet at the Peach and Pear Blossom Garden, which was itself influenced by an enchanting Li Bai poem from the 16th century. Through his masterful technique and attention to detail, Goshun pays homage to these literary influences while adding his own unique touch. Displayed as a hanging scroll on silk during Japan's Edo period (1615-1868), this heritage art piece exemplifies both traditional Japanese aesthetics and its deep appreciation for Chinese culture. Preserved within The Cleveland Museum of Art collection, this remarkable print allows us to marvel at Goshun's skillful interpretation of an iconic moment in history.
