Royal Agricultural College, Cirencester, 1845. Creator: Unknown

Royal Agricultural College, Cirencester, 1845. College in Gloucestershire designed by Dakes and Hamilton: The design is in the Tudor style, of three stories high; the upper story being lit by picturesque, old-fashioned dormer windows...The centre is occupied by a bold tower, 80 feet high; with a turreted newel of 100 feet, intended as an observatory, for meteorological and other scientific purposes. The materials are limestone from the quarries adjacent; the quoins, window-dressings, &c. being of freestone; and half the elevation is already completed...pupils and out-students will be received and educated; their time being divided between in-door instruction and out-door occupation...The structure and treatment of the Diseases of Cattle will be taught, and a simple but accurate system of Farm Accounts will form part of the instruction. From " Illustrated London News", 1845, Vol VII

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the Royal Agricultural College in Cirencester, England, as it stood proudly in 1845. Designed by Dakes and Hamilton, this magnificent Tudor-style college stands three stories high with charming dormer windows adorning its upper level. The focal point of the structure is a striking tower that reaches an impressive height of 80 feet, featuring a turreted newel soaring to 100 feet. This observatory was specifically built for meteorological and scientific purposes. Constructed using limestone from nearby quarries, the building boasts exquisite freestone quoins and window-dressings. At the time of this photograph's creation, half of the elevation had already been completed, showcasing meticulous craftsmanship. The Royal Agricultural College served as an educational institution where pupils and out-students were welcomed to receive instruction both indoors and outdoors. The curriculum encompassed various agricultural disciplines such as disease treatment for cattle and comprehensive farm accounting techniques. Originally published in "Illustrated London News" in 1845, this engraving offers a glimpse into nineteenth-century Britain's commitment to agricultural education and architectural grandeur. Preserved by The Print Collector under their esteemed collection of historical prints, this image captures not only the physical beauty but also represents an important era in British history when advancements in farming practices were highly valued.
