EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative photograph captures the remnants of St Sidwells Church on Sidwell Street in Exeter, Devon, following the devastating bomb damage inflicted during the Exeter Blitz in 1942. The church, which was built on the site of a medieval chapel in 1812-13 in the Gothic style, is seen here in ruins after a bomb fell at 2.43 am on the morning of May 4th, 1942. The blast destroyed most of the building, leaving only the shell of this once beautiful and historic place of worship. The image was captured by Margaret Tomlinson during the war, providing a poignant reminder of the destruction wrought by World War II on the city of Exeter and its buildings. The replacement church in local brick was later built in 1957-58, but this photograph stands as a testament to the past and the resilience of the community in the face of adversity.
