EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures a significant moment in the construction of Sizewell B Nuclear Power Station on the Suffolk coast. The image showcases the impressive steel liner for the reactor dome, consisting of three sections, positioned prominently in the foreground. As we gaze towards the south-east, our eyes are drawn to the towering presence of the reactor building under construction. Sizewell B stands as one of two nuclear power stations near Sizewell village, with its predecessor Sizewell A currently undergoing decommissioning. This pioneering facility is a Pressurised Water Reactor (PWR), marking a groundbreaking achievement as it was the first of its kind to be constructed within UK borders. The main civil engineering work for this monumental project was awarded to John Laing plc on May 19th, 1987. Over an eight-year period, this dedicated team tirelessly worked towards completing Sizewell B, which finally came to fruition in 1995. Operated by EDF Energy today, this powerful structure symbolizes not only advancements in engineering and civil works but also represents our reliance on nuclear energy during that era. The photograph's nighttime setting adds an air of mystery and intrigue to this historical moment frozen in time. Preserved within Historic England Archive's collection and captured by A© photographer Joh [surname omitted], this print serves as a testament to human ingenuity and innovation while reminding us of our ever-evolving relationship with energy production methods.
