This copperplate engraving, taken from Abraham Rees' Cyclopedia or Universal Dictionary of Arts, Sciences and Literature, published by Longman, Hurst, Rees, Orme and Brown in London in 1820, offers a detailed and intricate depiction of the anatomy of a horse's stomach and intestines. The image, engraved by Scott, invites us to explore the complex inner workings of equine digestion. The horse's stomach, located on the left side of the abdomen, is shown in cross-section, revealing its four distinct compartments: the rumen, reticulum, omasum, and abomasum. The rumen, the largest chamber, is where the horse begins to break down plant material through fermentation.
