EDITORS COMMENTS
In this historic photograph, taken on March 13, 1938, in Vienna, Austria, an impressive scene unfolds as 10,000 new recruits take the oath of allegiance to the Austrian Republic. The occasion marked a significant moment in Austrian history as the country, which had been annexed by Nazi Germany just days prior in the Anschluss, sought to rebuild its military forces under the leadership of Chancellor Kurt Schuschnigg. The Diplomatic Corps of Vienna, comprised of ambassadors and high-ranking diplomats from various countries, looked on as the young recruits, many of them wearing the new Austrian uniforms, raised their right hands to pledge their loyalty to the republic. The solemn ceremony took place in the spacious Hofburg Palace, the historic and symbolic seat of power in Vienna. The Anschluss, or the annexation of Austria by Nazi Germany, had occurred on March 12, 1938, following a series of political maneuvers and military pressure from Germany. The event marked the end of Austria's independence and the beginning of its incorporation into the Third Reich. The new recruits, who were sworn in just a day after the Anschluss, represented the Austrian people's determination to resist the Nazi occupation and preserve their national identity. The photograph offers a poignant reminder of a pivotal moment in World War II history, as Austria, a once-proud and independent nation, began the arduous process of rebuilding its military and reclaiming its sovereignty. The image also underscores the resilience and courage of the Austrian people during a time of great uncertainty and upheaval.
