EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative photograph captures a scene of Junkers Ju-87D-5 Stukas of the German Luftwaffe's 7th Sturzkampfgeschwader (7/Stg1) parked amongst trees in Germany during the early years of World War II. The date of this image is estimated to be around 1940. The Junkers Ju-87, commonly known as the Stuka, was a single-engined, low-wing monoplane that was both a fighter and a ground-attack aircraft. Powered by a piston engine, it was a formidable presence in the skies during the 1930s and 1940s. The Stuka was unique due to its distinctive inverted gull wings, which gave it its distinctive "screaming" sound when diving on targets. This sound became synonymous with the terror of German air raids during the early years of the war. In this photograph, we see several Ju-87D-5 Stukas, each with its wings folded, parked amongst the trees. The trees provide a stark contrast to the military machinery, adding a sense of tranquility to the scene. The Ju-87D-5 was the most advanced version of the Stuka, featuring numerous improvements over earlier models. It was equipped with a more powerful engine, improved armament, and better defensive armament. The Luftwaffe relied heavily on the Stuka during the early years of the war, using it for various roles, including ground-attack, reconnaissance, and even as a fighter. This photograph provides a glimpse into the past, offering a unique perspective on the German air force during the early years of World War II. The Ju-87 Stuka would go on to become one of the most recognizable aircraft of the war, and this image serves as a reminder of its significance in military history.
